« Electrospinning of Chitosan »

Résumé : Pure chitosan is not easy to be electrospun. Several parameters are involved, those related to polymer solution ---like viscosity, surface tension, concentration, pH, conductivity--- and those related to processing ---intensity of the electric field, distance from the tip of the needle to the collector, temperature, tip diameter, solution injection velocity ; moreover, chitosan is a natural polyelectrolyte, which also affect the process. Several fibers have been made by blending chitosan with another polymers. Pure chitosan has been succesfully electrospun by increasing the acetic acid content in the solution, i.e. more than 80-90 vol%. No previous work have attempted to explain why chitosan can be electrospun by blending or by increasing acetic acid content. We are studying intrinsic viscosity of chitosan as acetic acid content varies to get an insight of the polyelectrolyte conformation. Further experiments will be made using rheology and for different organic acids. An electrospinning apparatus was home-made to correlate these experiments with fiber formation. Our apparatus can control solution injection velocity, drum collector velocity, electric field voltage, distance from tip to drum and chamber temperature.
